6 Popular Box Surface Finishing to Improve Your Paper Packaging

The surface finishing  generally refers to a later period process of paper packaging. In order to make the paper packaging more durable, convenient and storage, and looks more high-grade. Printing surface treatment includes:

Lamination, Varnishing, Hot Foil Stamping, Embossing, Debossing, and Spot UV.

Box Surface Finishing  1: Lamination

Lamination is a thin plastic film pasting on the surface of the paper, because the lamination machine hot the material and heavily press it onto the paper.

Advantage 1:Protecting the printing colors on your paper packaging.

Advantage 2: It can decorate the box. For example, make the surface feeling matte or glossy and could protect the surface of the paper packaging.

Advantage 3: Last but not least, making the box stronger than no lamination. Because after laminating, it could improve the box strength. So the folding edge of the box will be more firm.

The surface has no marks after being scratched, so it’s most useful for dark color backgrounds.

Box Surface Finishing  2: Varnishing

What’s varnishing?

Varnish is a liquid finishing on the surface of paper packaging that gives a shiny, matte coating. And protecting the printing colors and preventing the color ink from rubbing off.

Category: Glossy varnishing, matte varnishing, and UV varnishing.

Advantage: The cost of varnishing is cheaper than other finishing. Furthermore, it’s fast to brush and dry. It could save your lead time.

Disadvantage: The Varnishing could cause a color difference in the paper. So we suggest a coating which won’t cause the color difference.

Box Surface Finishing 3: Hot Foil Stamping

Hot foil stamping is a kind of printing. The stamping machine transfers the foil material onto the surface of the paper at high temperatures. It needs a foil plate to do it, and the plate is customized.

Even though there are many finishing to highlight the brand, the hot foil stamping is the most used. Because it looks more luxurious and lasts a long time. And it also has different styles to decorate your Logo.

Gold Foil Stamping

Design the metal plate at different heights and press it on paper or other materials with tons of power, and the embossing will be shown. The height of embossing depends on your design and the thickness of the paper.

Box Surface Finishing 5: Debossing

Debossing is the opposite process of creating embossing.  The depth is not suggested as too big, or the paper will not be firm.

The advantage of embossing and debossing is they could make the brand looks like a 3D effect to attract more eyes.
The disadvantage is their cost is more than other finishing like lamination, varnishing, and hot foil stamping.

Box Surface Finishing 6: Spot UV

Spot UV means to do UV coating for a specific area. And allow adding layers to make it thicker. Then it could highlight the brand by touching feeling and shiny looking.

The area of spot UV should be not too small, or it will look blurry. And it does not suggest being too big, because the cost will be expensive due to its size. More area, more expensive.

The reverse UV can make the Glossy effect and the Matt effect exist on the same printed paper at the same time, forming a stronger contrast in brightness. So that the reverse UV can achieve a better effect
